Ahom dynasty

The Ahom dynasty (Assamese: আহোম ৰাজবংশ, romanized: Āhom Rājbaṃśa), also known as Swargadeo dynasty, was the ruling house of the Ahom kingdom in present-day Assam, India. According to the conventional chronology, it was founded in 1228 by Sukaphaa, a Tai prince traditionally associated with Mong Mao in southwestern Yunnan, who entered the Brahmaputra Valley after crossing the Patkai mountains. A recent study of Tai and Chinese sources has questioned this chronology, suggesting that the Ahom polity may instead have been established in the fourteenth century. Under the conventional dating, members of the dynasty ruled for nearly six centuries. Independent Ahom rule ended during the Burmese invasions of Assam, and Assam was subsequently annexed by the British East India Company following the Treaty of Yandabo in 1826. Purandar Singha was later restored as the tributary ruler of Upper Assam from 1833 to 1838. In external medieval chronicles the kings of this dynasty were called Asam Raja, whereas the subjects of the kingdom called them Chaopha, or Swargadeo (in Assamese).
