Anton Joseph Cermak (May 9, 1873 – March 6, 1933) was an American politician who served as the 44th Mayor of Chicago from 1931 until he was fatally wounded in 1933 by Giuseppe Zangara, who was trying to assassinate President-elect Franklin D. Roosevelt. A 1994 survey of experts on Chicago politics assessed Cermak as one of the ten best mayors in the city's history.
