The digital ruble (Russian: цифровой рубль, romanized: tsifrovoy rubl') is a central bank digital currency (CBDC) issued by the Central Bank of Russia (Bank of Russia). It represents the third official form of the Russian national currency alongside cash and commercial bank deposits, with all forms legally equivalent and exchangeable at par. The platform is operated directly by the Bank of Russia, while commercial credit institutions act as intermediaries providing account access through mobile banking applications. Real-money pilot testing began on 15 August 2023, followed by legislation enacting a mandatory phased commercial rollout starting on 1 September 2026.
