The Eems Canal in the Netherlands connects the city of Groningen to Delfzijl and the Eems. The canal was constructed between 1866 and 1876 and was upgraded in 1967. The canal was designed as a minor ship canal and as the main canal for draining water from Drenthe and the east of Groningen province. The canal is now part of the Lemmer–Delfzijl Waterway, which is of international importance. It is also still used by coasters and vessels newly built by inland shipyards.
