Machine-translated from the Italian article

Roberto Abate S.p.A., better known as Gruppo Abate, was an Italian company operating in the organised large-scale retail sector, based in Belpasso, in the province of Catania. The company was founded in 1979 by the Paternò merchant Roberto Abate under the business name Abate Roberto S.r.l., which opened a supermarket at Piano Tavola, a hamlet of Belpasso in the province of Catania, under the Grandi Alimentari banner, with an attached wholesale distribution centre. In the 1990s, Abate opened other outlets in the Catania area, and entered the food discount sector as a founding member, in 1994, of the consortium company SD Sicilia Discounts, together with other Sicilian large-scale retail companies, and introduced the EGA Discount chain of GEA to the island.
