He was a prominent Maliki jurist, traditionist, grammarian, linguist, poet, litterateur, and a bibliographer. He was considered the foremost Quran commentator of his time. His fame largely derives from his highly celebrated commentary on the Quran entitled Tafsir Ibn Atiyya.
