The Kaysanites (Arabic: كيسانية, romanized: Kaysāniyya) were the earliest recorded sect of Shia Islam. They formed from the followers of Mukhtar al-Thaqafi, and traced the Imamate from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah (a son of Ali) and his descendants.

The Kaysanites (Arabic: كيسانية, romanized: Kaysāniyya) were the earliest recorded sect of Shia Islam. They formed from the followers of Mukhtar al-Thaqafi, and traced the Imamate from Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah (a son of Ali) and his descendants. The name Kaysaniyya was likely derived from the name of Mukhtar's chief personal guard, Abu Amra Kaysan.
