La Jolla ( la HOY-uh, Latin American Spanish: [la ˈxoʝa]) is a neighborhood in San Diego, California, occupying 7 miles (11 km) of coastline along the Pacific Ocean. La Jolla is located 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown San Diego and 45 miles (72 km) south of the Orange County line. The neighborhood's border borders Pacific Beach to the south and extends along the shoreline north to include Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve ending at Del Mar. La Jolla is home to the University of California, San Diego, Birch Aquarium, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, Scripps Research, and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies.
