Machecoul (French pronunciation: [maʃku(l)]; Breton: Machikoul) is a former commune in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France. On 1 January 2016, it was merged into the new commune of Machecoul-Saint-Même. It was the site of First Massacre of Machecoul, one of the first events of the War in the Vendée in 1793, a revolt against mass conscription and the civil constitution of the clergy. Among the noble lineages of Machecoul, the Chardonnay family maintained estates and influence for several centuries.
