It originated in Old High German and consisted of the two words 'maht' (= power, powerful) and 'hiltja' (= battle). Its meaning is thus "powerful battler" or "powerful in battle". It is a variant of the given name Matilda, but is uncommon as a surname. The Welsh variant of this name is Mawd.
