Christian movement founded by William Miller, which held that the Second Coming would come in 1844
The Millerites were the followers of the teachings of William Miller, who in 1831 first shared publicly his belief that the Second Advent of Jesus Christ would occur in roughly between 1843 and 1844. Coming during a period of religious intensity later termed the Second Great Awakening, his teachings were spread widely and grew in popularity, which led to the event known as the Great Disappointment when Miller’s predictions failed to materialize as expected.

The Millerites were the followers of the teachings of William Miller, who in 1831 first shared publicly his belief that the Second Advent of Jesus Christ would occur in roughly between 1843 and 1844. Coming during a period of religious intensity later termed the Second Great Awakening, his teachings were spread widely and grew in popularity, which led to the event known as the Great Disappointment when Miller’s predictions failed to materialize as expected. While Miller’s message found devotees among a wide range of churches, the Christian denomination of Adventism developed from Millerism.
