From Wikipedia

Open Sound Control (OSC) is a protocol for networking sound synthesizers, computers, and other multimedia devices for purposes such as musical performance or show control. OSC's advantages include interoperability, accuracy, flexibility, and detailed documentation. Its disadvantages include higher bandwidth requirements and load on embedded processors relative to alternatives such as MIDI, as well as a lack of standardized messages across different devices. The first specification was released in March 2002.
