picket guard

Machine-translated from the German article

Schildwachen (sentries) are soldiers who perform guard duty. Originally, the term referred to the sentry standing in front of each guardhouse, whose task was to guard the shields and weapons placed there. In a broader sense, Schildwache later came to denote any individual sentry post in garrison and camp duty.
