Powhatan people ( POW-hə-TAN, pow-HAT-ən) were an Indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands. They were the leading member of the Powhatan Confederacy in Tsenacommacah, whose historic territories are in central Tidewater Virginia along the James River.

Powhatan people ( POW-hə-TAN, pow-HAT-ən) were an Indigenous people of the Northeastern Woodlands. They were the leading member of the Powhatan Confederacy in Tsenacommacah, whose historic territories are in central Tidewater Virginia along the James River. The Powhatan people spoke the Powhatan language which is a member of the Algonquian language family. The Powhatan tribe was governed by its own Weroance while also being led by the leader of the Confederacy, the Mamantowick. At time of contact the Weroance of the Powhatan was Parahunt.
