The 1998 SummerSlam, promoted as SummerSlam: Highway to Hell, was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE). It was the 11th annual SummerSlam and took place on August 30, 1998, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York. This was the third SummerSlam at the venue, after the inaugural 1988 event and the 1991 event. Eleven matches were contested at the event, including three on the Sunday Night Heat pre-show. The promotional title was a reference to the main event, which saw "Stone Cold" Steve Austin retain the WWF Championship against The Undertaker. The main match on the undercard featured a ladder match for the WWF Intercontinental Championship between Triple H and The Rock, in which Triple H went on to win the Intercontinental Championship. This SummerSlam was also notable for the pay-per-view in-ring debut of Edge.
