Although he denied the usual distinction between philosophy and the history of philosophy, he had strong interests throughout the history of philosophy and defended a constructivist view of epistemology. The philosophers whom he studied extensively were Kant, Fichte, Hegel, Marx, Lukács, and Heidegger.
