Umar ibn Ali

Umar ibn Ali (Arabic: عمر بن علي, romanized: ʿUmar ibn ʿAlī), was a son of Ali, the cousin and son-in-law of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, the first Shia Imam, and the fourth Rashidun caliph. He accompanied his brother, Husayn, to Karbala and was killed on the day of Ashura. There is a disagreement about whether his name was Umar or Amr al-Asghar (Arabic: عمرو الأصغر). It is said that except for him, Ali had another son called Amr al-Akbar, whose mother was Umm Habib al-Sahba, and was not present in the Battle of Karbala. Umar ibn Ali and his brothers Abbas, Abdullah, Uthman, Muhammad al-Asghar and Ja'far accompanied Husayn in his journey from Mecca to Kufa and were martyred at the Battle of Karbala. Their graves are in the mausoleum of the collective grave of the martyrs of Karbala in the Imam Husayn Shrine, a profoundly holy site in Shia Islam.
