William Hartnell

William Henry Hartnell (; 8 January 1908 – 23 April 1975) was an English actor. He is best remembered for his portrayal of the first incarnation of the Doctor in Doctor Who from 1963 to 1966. Years earlier, he was associated with tough military roles, including in the television sitcom The Army Game (1957–1961) and the film Carry On Sergeant (1958), following several years in stage and comedy work. His legacy became overshadowed by the popularity and acclaim for his performance as the Doctor, who became one of the most popular and iconic characters in British television history. Born in St Pancras, London, to a single mother, Hartnell had a difficult and problematic childhood. As a teenager, he lived with Hugh Blaker, who paid for his training at a drama school and helped secure work with Frank Benson's company in 1925. He acted in several plays, touring around theatres in England and Canada, where he met his future wife, Heather McIntyre, with whom he had a daughter. After minor appearances in British films, Hartnell secured lead roles in "quota quickies" in the 1930s, gaining attention for his comedic performances in films like Follow the Lady and I'm an Explosive (both 1933). After a brief stint in the army, Hartnell returned to acting, including in the play Brighton Rock (1942) and its 1948 film adaptation. The play led to his breakthrough role as a sergeant in The Way Ahead (1944), which prompted leading roles like Murder in Reverse (1945) and Appointment with Crime (1946). He returned to the stage in Seagulls Over Sorrento, which ran for more than 1,500 West End performances from 1950 to 1954.
