Overhang seats are the seats that a party wins when it takes a larger share of the individual constituencies than its share of the nationwide votes entitles it. Under some proportional representation systems, overhang seats refer to the compensation seats that may be created to compensate for when that over-representation happens.

Overhang seats are the seats that a party wins when it takes a larger share of the individual constituencies than its share of the nationwide votes entitles it. Under some proportional representation systems, overhang seats refer to the compensation seats that may be created to compensate for when that over-representation happens. They were first used in the mixed-member proportional (MMP) system as it originated in Germany.
