War is a 2007 American action thriller film directed by Philip G. Atwell in his directorial debut and featuring stage combat choreographed by Corey Yuen. The film stars Jet Li and Jason Statham in their second cinematic pairing (after the 2001 film The One), with John Lone, Devon Aoki, and Luis Guzmán appearing in supporting roles. The plot follows FBI agent Crawford (Statham) who is determined to track down and kill a mysterious assassin known as Rogue (Li) after his partner and family are murdered, dragging him into a brutal turf war between rival Triad and Yakuza factions. War's working title was Rogue; it was changed to avoid conflict with another film with the same name. It was re-titled as Rogue Assassin in New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, India, Australia, the Philippines and several European countries. The film was released in the United States on August 24, 2007. It grossed $40.7 million at the box office against the $25 million budget. While War initially received generally negative reviews from mainstream critics upon its release, modern commentators frequently classify the film as a cult classic within Li's Hollywood filmography because of its over-the-top spectacle.
