The Ja'fari school or Jafarite is the largest and principal school of Islamic jurisprudence in Shia Islam. Jaʿfar al-Sadiq, the sixth Shia Imam, whose teachings played a major role in the development of Shia theology and jurisprudence, is the eponymous founder of the Ja'fari school. The school derives its rulings from the Quran, the sayings and practices of Muhammad (Sunnah), scholarly consensus (ijma), and reason (ʿaql). It differs from the four Sunni schools of jurisprudence in its approach to ijtihad and in certain matters of inheritance, religious taxes, commerce, personal status, and the permissibility of temporary marriage (mutʿa). The school developed and spread throughout the Muslim world through the teachings of the Twelve Imams, particularly Ja'far al-Sadiq, whose legal opinions form the foundation of Ja'fari jurisprudence. During the Buyid Empire (934–1062 AD), their kings supported the development of Ja'fari scholarship, while the Safavid Empire later established Twelver Shia Islam as its official religion in the early 16th century, greatly contributing to the institutionalization and expansion of the school. Under Safavid patronage, prominent Shia scholars from the Arab world migrated to Iran, where they helped systematize Ja'fari jurisprudence. The school subsequently became the principal legal tradition of Shia Islam and remains very influential in Iran, Iraq, India, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Bahrain, Lebanon, Afghanistan, and other parts of the Muslims world. Followers of the Ja'fari school are known as Ja'faris or Twelver Shia Muslims, numbering in the hundreds of millions worldwide. The Ja'fari school is enshrined in the Constitution of Iran, shaping its governance, legislation, and the judiciary. In Lebanon, it is recognized within the country's legal system.
