Dissidenten are a German world music and indie rock band formed in 1980, consisting of founding members Uwe "Uve" Müllrich, Friedemann "Friedo" Josch, and Marlon Klein, who joined in 1981. The group gained international recognition particularly for their early collaborations with artists from the Middle East, North Africa, and India. Their greatest commercial success came with the dance hits Fata Morgana (from the 1984 album Sahara Elektrik) and Telephone Arab (from the 1986 album Life at the Pyramids), which achieved high chart positions in Europe and South America, and reached cult status in Brazil as the theme music for popular telenovelas. Their 1992 album The Jungle Book was also an international success, reaching number 2 on the annual World Music Charts Europe in 1993. The American Rolling Stone magazine described the band as the "Godfathers of World-Beat" due to their pioneering role in fusing Western pop and rock music with traditional Eastern sounds. Musician Paul Simon called them the "true godfathers of ethno-beat." The band's name refers to the term dissident—meaning those who think differently or are in opposition—underlining their musical openness beyond conventional norms.
