Berau Regency

Berau Regency (Indonesian: Kabupaten Berau, Berau: Barrau) is the most northern of the seven regencies in East Kalimantan province in Indonesia. The capital is the town of Tanjung Redeb. The regency has an area of 36,962.37 km2 and had a population of 179,079 at the 2010 census and 248,035 at the 2020 census; the official estimate as at mid 2025 was 308,020 (comprising 163,632 males and 144,388 females). Berau was formerly the name of a local sultanate that existed from the 17th century and originally included what is now the province of North Kalimantan. This was split up following a civil war in 1770 into four separate sultanates during the Dutch colonial period. In the early 19th century, the remaining portion was divided between two separate sultanates: Gunung Tabur and Sambaliung, now substantialy reunited into the present Berau Regency.
