An eruv ([(ʔ)eˈʁuv]; Hebrew: עירוב, lit. 'mixture') is a ritual halakhic enclosure made to allow Orthodox Jews to carry objects outdoors, which is normally prohibited on Shabbat. With an eruv, Jews can carry their house keys, tissues, medication, babies, and other objects, and can use strollers and canes – all of which are otherwise forbidden.

An eruv ([(ʔ)eˈʁuv]; Hebrew: עירוב, lit. 'mixture') is a ritual halakhic enclosure made to allow Orthodox Jews to carry objects outdoors, which is normally prohibited on Shabbat. With an eruv, Jews can carry their house keys, tissues, medication, babies, and other objects, and can use strollers and canes – all of which are otherwise forbidden. An eruv accomplishes this by symbolically integrating a number of private properties and spaces such as streets and sidewalks into one larger "private domain" by surrounding them with ritual walls. Often a group constructing an eruv obtains a lease to the required land from a local government.
