The district was formed from Kakinada and Peddapuram revenue divisions from East Godavari district. Incidentally, during earlier times, the region comprising towns Pithapuram, Kakinada and Peddapuram were referred as Prolunadu (prōlunāḍu) or Polnaud, which now roughly corresponds to the areas in this district.
