The Madhiban (Somali: Madhibaan; Arabic: مطيبان, also spelled ماديبان; alternate spellings: Madeban, Madebaan, Madebban) are a socially and historically marginalized community primarily distributed across the Horn of Africa, with significant populations in northern Somalia (Somaliland, Puntland, and northeastern regions) and communities throughout the Somali-speaking territories of eastern Ethiopia and Djibouti. Scholars from the early twentieth century to the present — including Renato Biasutti, Enrico Cerulli, I. M. Lewis, and Hawa Y. Mire — have proposed that the Madhiban descend from populations that inhabited the region prior to the arrival of Somali nomadic pastoralist groups.
