The Crisis

The Crisis is the official magazine of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Founded in 1910 by W. E. B. Du Bois (editor), Oswald Garrison Villard, J. Max Barber, Charles Edward Russell, Kelly Miller, William Stanley Braithwaite, and Mary Dunlop Maclean, it has been in continuous print since then. The Crisis is considered the oldest Black-oriented magazine in the world. Under Du Bois's editorship, it became an important forum for civil rights advocacy, political commentary, visual culture, and literary work associated with the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. Today, the magazine describes itself as "a quarterly journal of civil rights, history, politics and culture" that seeks to educate readers about issues affecting African Americans and other communities of color.
